The Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW) hosted the September edition of its She Means Business Dialogue on the theme, “Smart Money, Smart Business: Financial Strategies for Sustainable Enterprise Growth.”
The session featured Mr. Isiri Uko, a consultant and business coach, as the guest speaker. He provided practical insights to help entrepreneurs strengthen their financial management, improve cash flow, make informed financial decisions, and build businesses that can achieve sustainable growth and long-term wealth.
Knowing Your Numbers: The Foundation of a Sustainable Business
A key message from the session was the importance of knowing your numbers. Mr. Uko stressed that entrepreneurs must have a clear understanding of their business income, expenses, costs, profit margins, cash position, and financial obligations.
He encouraged business owners to maintain proper financial records and use accurate information to guide business decisions rather than relying on assumptions.
Participants were also reminded of the importance of separating personal and business finances. Entrepreneurs were encouraged to operate dedicated business accounts and ensure that business transactions are properly recorded and documented.
Costing and Pricing for Profitability
The session also examined the relationship between costing, pricing, and profitability.
Mr. Uko highlighted the need for entrepreneurs to understand the full cost of producing or delivering their products and services before determining prices. He discussed practical approaches to cost analysis and pricing, supported by examples and cost templates.
The discussion reinforced the need for business owners to regularly review their pricing to ensure that their prices reflect their actual costs while supporting sustainable profit.
Cash Flow Planning: Managing the Lifeblood of the Business
Another major focus was cash flow management. Participants learned that strong sales do not necessarily translate into a healthy business if cash is not available when needed.
Mr. Uko encouraged entrepreneurs to develop and document cash flow plans that anticipate expected income, expenses, funding requirements, and potential shortfalls.
The importance of planning ahead was particularly highlighted for businesses with seasonal or fluctuating income, including agricultural enterprises. Entrepreneurs were encouraged to align funding and purchasing decisions with their production cycles and expected cash inflows.
Building Financial Shock Absorbers
To strengthen business resilience, Mr. Uko encouraged entrepreneurs to establish a financial “shock absorber” through business reserves and backup financing options.
He advised business owners to build reserves before they are urgently needed and explore appropriate financing options, such as overdraft facilities or pre-approved loans, where suitable.
The goal, he explained, is to ensure that unexpected expenses or temporary cash flow challenges do not immediately threaten the survival of the business.
Borrowing Wisely and Growing into Wealth
The discussion also addressed responsible borrowing. Entrepreneurs were encouraged to understand why they are borrowing, how the funds will be used, and how repayment will affect the business’s cash flow.
Borrowing should support productive business activities and be aligned with realistic repayment capacity.
Beyond simply growing revenue, participants were encouraged to focus on building businesses that can create sustainable wealth over time through sound financial management, proper structures, and disciplined reinvestment.
Strengthening Business Structures and Systems
The session also highlighted the importance of putting proper business systems in place. Entrepreneurs were encouraged to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key business activities, including cash handling, inventory management, and other operational processes.
For businesses where personal and business finances have previously been mixed, Mr. Uko advised entrepreneurs to regularise their financial structures. Where necessary, business owners can seek support from professional bookkeepers or tax consultants.
The discussion also touched on agricultural businesses, with recommendations including cooperative participation for bulk purchasing and accessing appropriate financing that matches production timelines.
Key Takeaways and Action Points
Participants were encouraged to move beyond learning and put the lessons from the session into practice.
Key action points include:

From Knowledge to Action
The September She Means Business Dialogue reinforced an important message: sustainable business growth requires more than making sales—it requires financial discipline, planning, structure, and informed decision-making.
By knowing their numbers, separating business from personal finances, planning their cash flow, building reserves, and borrowing wisely, entrepreneurs can position their businesses to withstand challenges and take advantage of opportunities for growth.
NNEW continues to provide platforms that equip women entrepreneurs with the knowledge, connections, and practical tools they need to build stronger and more sustainable businesses.
The journey continues at the NNEW Summit 2026, scheduled for October 15–16, 2026, at NECA House, Lagos, under the theme: “RISE. LEAD. TRANSFORM.”
